چکیده

Fire suppression in the Southern Appalachians has led to changes in forests dominated by yellow pine (Pinus subgenus pinus) and oak (Quercus) species. Recently, management agencies have begun to prescribe fire with the aim of restoring pre-suppression conditions. Here, I examine the use of prescribed fire in the Southern Appalachians from two perspectives. First, I review the values and goals that underlie fire management, how they apply in the Southern Appalachians, and what the implications of these are for fire management planning. Second, I use long-term monitoring data to examine how prescribed fire affects forest structure and composition in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and how these effects vary with environment and fire severity. I find that prescribed fire creates conditions conducive for pine reproduction and is particularly effective at high severity and at lower elevation sites where fire sensitive species are still confined to smaller size classes. iii Dedicated to my grandmother, Lillian Schwartz. iv Acknowledgements

Investigating Effects of a Prescribed Spring Fire on Symbiosis between Mycorrhiza Fungi and Range Plant Species

Fire is one of the incorporate vegetation management practices for grasslands and semi-arid rangelands. It may affect symbiotic relationship between range plants and mycorrhiza. Accordingly, this research was aimed to investigate the effects of a spring prescribed fire on the symbiotic relationships between mycorrhiza and 6 plant species. The study was conducted in a semi-arid steppe rangeland ...

Assessment of Fire Severity and Species Diversity in the Southern Appalachians Using Landsat Tm and Etm+ Imagery

Relatively little is known about the disturbance ecology of large wildfires in the southern Appalachians. The occurrence of a 4000-ha wildfire in the Linville Gorge Wilderness area in western North Carolina has provided a rare opportunity to study a large fire with a range of severities. The objectives of this study were to 1) assess the potential for using multi-temporal Landsat imagery to map...

Fire effects on composition, density and species diversity vegetation and soil seed bank (Case study: Kangavar rangelands)

Abstract Background and objectives: Fire as a frequent phenomenon in rangelands and because of its complicated and different effects on natural ecosystems, has great importance. Awareness of such fire effects on vegetation cover in point of rangeland management after fire is important and helps better Understanding and sustainable management of rangelands. Changing in plant structure and compo...

Stream Nitrate Response to Different Burning Treatments in Sout Ern Appalac Ian Forests

Southern Appalachian forests are undergoing considerable change due to altered disturbance regimes. For example, fire exclusion has had a major impact on the structure and function of pine-hardwood ecosystems. Recently, fire has been prescribed for a variety of applications: 1) stand-replacement in the form of a mimicked wildfire, 2) site-preparation as part of a fell-and-burn prescription, and...
